Coaches
FOOTFAULT
PETER FARRELL – Development Officer.
Several people have spoken to me recently about the fact that a lot of our young players “suffer from” a tendency to footfault. I think that this is something that coaches should be addressing.

Players footfault because they don`t know about the relevant rule, or they have technical problems on the serve which leads to them footfaulting, or they don`t think it is any big deal...these are all things which coaches can help with.
Sometimes a player only realises he or she is footfaulting when they are called during an important match – the only type of match where there would be an umpire in place to enforce this rule. By then it`s too late and a players confidence and performance can suddenly plummet, leading to the loss of a big match.
I have produced an A4 poster which you might like to use at your club to inform all players of the situation as regards footfaulting. I hope you find it of use in drawing players attention to the footfault rule. You can download it using the link at the bottom of this page.
